World Traveler

Some kids never leave the country, much less the county.  By the time I was 12 years of age I had traveled from Richmond CA, to Portland OR, Panama, Portland again, Germany, New York, and Maryland and back to Sacramento, Covelo and Chico.

The Army likes to keep soldiers on their toes by giving them different training opportunities.  Advancement comes from taking on a variety of job assignments and my Dad was a very capable teacher of fighting men.

The edge I developed from my young Army upbringing didn't often set well in civilian life, but I managed to stay out of too much trouble.  I did excel at sports, but often clashed with coaches in my High School years.

Finally when called to duty, my brother chose the Navy, and I chose the Air Force.  So, here I am a well rounded product of society, and the military.

The thing is, the military had a hard time letting go of me when my wife and I decided we had had enough of budget cuts, poor management employee relations in the unit, and much of the other things that can turn you sour on serving your country.

Upon my return to civilian life I spent 2 years majoring in Business and Computer Science.

I was enrolled in JC on the G.I. Bill, when 2 weeks into my last course before transferring to the UC system, along comes this interesting individual, who attached himself to me like a tic on the dog gravy train if you know what I mean.

He made it his life's mission to recruit me into a fraternal organization that required some bit of memorization and ritual.

You learned from a designated coach who taught you from memory what he knew of the material.

I struggled due to his poor retention of the material, as he was my trainer and you can't expect to excel if you are being trained by someone who didn't do his homework or have it down word perfect.

Finally I was assigned a member who had the material down pat, and I also excelled.

My main reason for accepting the organization was it was touted as good business sense that made contacts with the community.  But the community had other plans for me.

I fought for freedom and lost mine to the intentions of others.
